Schedule an Event

You can create, edit, and delete one-time or recurring events from the Schedule page. Here are some key concepts that will help you understand how scheduling works in Studio.

Scheduled Event

Schedule an event by clicking the + Add Event button. A scheduled event can correspond to a single real-life event, a group of related events (such as multiple Sunday services), or a replay event.

Content Source

Every event requires one or more content sources. This is either content being captured live from an encoder, or replayed web video(s) from one or more web channels (these are set per destination).

Content Destinations

When you set up an event, you can add multiple destinations for your content - a web channel (which can be embedded in a web page) or stream URL (allows playback via third party integrations),, Facebook, and YouTube. Each destination is configured separately and can have a unique run time (within the schedule of its parent event), video title, description, and more. For example, you may set up

  • A scheduled event that corresponds with simultaneous streams to web and social destinations.
  • A scheduled event that encompasses several services, with destinations for each service, configured to broadcast subsequently.

Before You Get Started

Before you create a new event, you must configure the following in your account: 

(In most cases, Resi support will set these up for you when you start a subscription with Resi.)

If you plan to stream this event to the web, you must also configure the following (these are typically created by Resi users). 

If you plan to stream to social media, you must connect your social media accounts. Learn how to do this for YouTube or Facebook.


1. Add an Event

Click the + Add Event button in the upper right to get started.

2. Provide Event Details

Provide an event name and description (optional) for your event. The name and description are internal to your team and will be displayed where your event appears in Studio. (You’ll set audience-facing event names and descriptions when you configure your content destinations.)


3. Schedule Your Event

Provide the scheduling details for your event.

  • Start Date - Set the date your event will take place. For recurring events, select the first date you want to stream your event with Resi.
  • Start Time - Set the time your event begins. If you’re configuring an event that contains multiple services, select the time the first service begins. 

(Note: Resi uses a 2-minute delay to buffer your broadcast. If you would like your web broadcasts to begin at the exact same time as your in-person event, set the start time to 2 minutes earlier (e.g. 9:58am instead of 10:00am).

  • Duration - Set the duration of your event (in hours and minutes). If you’re configuring an event that contains multiple services, provide a duration that covers all services.
  • Timezone - Set the timezone of your event. 
  • Repeats - Toggle Repeats on if you’re setting up a recurring event. This opens additional options to set your event frequency and end date. 

4. Select Your Content Source

Select the content source for your streaming event. 

  • To broadcast a live event, select Live Encoder
  • To broadcast a previously recorded event that viewers consume as a live event (i.e. with a defined start time), select Replay.

If you want your event content to be available on demand indefinitely, use the Library to save and share it (requires a Content Library subscription).


Live Encoder

  1. Select the encoder and encoder preset you want to use to capture the content. 
  2. Select the encoder channel in which you want your event recording to be stored. If you’re broadcasting to a decoder at another location, make sure you select a channel that the decoder has access to
  3. Set the pre-event and post-event buffers. These determine when your encoder will start and stop capturing and encoding content. Typically, you’ll want to have around a 30 minute buffer before and after an event in order to ensure that your setup is working properly ahead of the event, and to account for the 2-minute delay Resi uses to buffer your stream.

Replay

Replay settings are configured on a per-destination basis. Settings such as the web channel, video title, and video description can be unique to each destination.


5. Configure Your Content Destinations

Select the content destinations to which you want to stream. The number of destinations a user can associate with an event is based on an organization’s web plan. 

You can add multiple destinations to an event. However, you’ll configure them one at a time. Select an event type, configure it, then click Add

Web

  1. Select the web channel you want to use. 
  • Live event - your event broadcast will be sent to and stored in the web channel you select. 
  • Replay - your event will play back the most recent broadcast in the web channel(s) you select for your destinations (this is designated in each channel by a Next Replay tag).  

A web channel corresponds to specific embed code and stream URLs that can be reused across multiple events.

  1. Select the web preset you want to use for this event. 
  2. Live event - Select the stream offset. Stream offset allows you to adjust the start time of your stream in relation to the start/end time of your scheduled event. For example,

If you are creating an event that corresponds to a single real-life event...your live event begins at 10am with music, followed by a keynote speaker, but you only want to stream the speaker portion to the web. In this case, if you plan 15 minutes of music, you would set the stream offset to 15 minutes. If there’s content at the end of the event that you don’t want to stream to the web, use the ending offset to stop streaming before that portion of the event.

In this case:

  • Your physical event starts at 10:00am.
  • Your broadcast begins at 10:15am
  • At 10:17am (Resi streams to the web with a 2 minute delay), your web viewers see what was broadcast from the physical venue at 10:15am.
  • The event video stored in your web channel will correspond to your broadcast–any content excluded by your offsets will not appear in your web video.

If you are creating an event that encompasses multiple services…Your first service starts at 9am, your second service at 10:30am. Create a web destination for each service and use the stream offset to set each web destination to start at the time your services start. Do the same for any social destinations you add

In this case:

  • Your first service starts at 9:00am
  • Your first web destination is configured to start at 8:58am (2 minutes early to account for Resi’s buffering.)
  • Your second service starts 10:30am.
  • Your second web destination is configured to start at 10:28am (2 minutes early to account for Resi’s buffering.)

Keep in mind: Your stream will begin approximately 2 minutes after your displayed stream time. This allows the Resi service to buffer and provide a resilient stream.

  1. Provide a web event title and description (optional).
  2. Click Add.

Facebook

  1. Select the Facebook account with the appropriate destination permissions. Learn more about connecting Resi to a Facebook account.
  2. Select the specific destination in Facebook you want to stream to.
  3. Select the privacy level for your stream. Learn more
  4. Select the publish status for your stream.
  • Published
  • Unpublished
  • Scheduled Post
  • Replay event: select the web channel that houses the video you want to broadcast.
  • Live event - Select the stream offset. Stream offset allows you to adjust the start time of your stream in relation to the start/end time of your scheduled event. For example,

    • Your event is configured to start at 9:00am, with a 30 minute buffer to ensure your setup is working, and to account for the 2 minutes Resi uses to buffer your stream. (This means your encoder will start capturing and encoding content at 8:30am.)
    • Your first web destination is configured to start at 8:58am (2 minutes early to account for Resi’s buffering.)
    • Your second service starts at 10:30am.
    • Your second web destination is configured to start at 10:28am (2 minutes early to account for Resi’s buffering.)

    Keep in mind: Your stream will begin approximately 2 minutes after your displayed stream time. This allows the Resi service to buffer and provide a resilient stream.

    1. Provide a title and description (optional) for your Facebook video. This will be displayed to your viewers on Facebook.
    2. Click Add.

    If you edit a scheduled event in Facebook or YouTube, you may experience errors with that destination.  Both Facebook and YouTube update their product regularly, which could affect your scheduled events if you try to edit them through the social media websites or applications. If you need to edit the title or description of your event, we recommend doing so through Studio.


    YouTube

    1. Select the linked YouTube channel you want to stream to. Learn more about linking a YouTube account to Resi.
    2. Select the privacy for your YouTube stream. Learn more
    3. Select the publish status for your Youtube stream. Learn more
    4. Replay event: Select the web channel that houses the video you want to broadcast.
    5. Live event - Select the stream offset. Stream offset allows you to adjust the start time of your stream in relation to the start/end time of your scheduled event. For example,

    1. Provide a YouTube video title and description (optional). These will be displayed to your viewers  on YouTube.
    2. Click Add.

    6. Edit or Delete an Event

    Find an Existing Event

    You have several options for finding an existing event.

    • Search events by title - Use the search field to search for events by title.
    • Filter events by type - Click Filters, then check the box beside the type of event you want to see.

    • View month-by-month - By default, the Schedule page displays the current month. You can scroll to previous or subsequent months by clicking the arrow.

    Edit an Event

    You can edit events by clicking them. 

    1. Click the event you want to edit.
    2. In the event details page, click the edit icon.

    Delete an Event

    1. Click the event you want to delete.
    2. In the event details page, click the options icon .
    3. Select Remove.

    1. In the modal that appears, confirm you want to remove the scheduled event. It will no longer be on the schedule. 

    Duplicate a schedule

    Duplicating a schedule allows you to copy the exact details of one of your scheduled events to a second event with a single click. You don’t need to fill out the details or configure the destinations again. Learn more

    1. Navigate to the Schedule page in Studio.
    2. Select the single event or an instance of a recurring event you want to duplicate on the schedule. 
    3. Click the actions icon > Duplicate.
    4. In the Add Event page, edit any details for your event that you want to change (Learn more). Please note that Studio automatically adds “Copy of” to the event name and adjusts the start date forward 7 days. 
    5. At the bottom of the page, click Save
    6. Your event will now appear in the scheduler and run at the date and time you selected.

     


    7. View Events on the Dashboard

    You can view live and scheduled events on the Dashboard. Navigate to the Dashboard.

    The Events Widget on the right side will display your live and upcoming events. Pink dots indicate scheduled events. To see events on an individual day, click the day. To see an itemized list of live and upcoming events, click See All.

    8. What If I Need to Stop an Event to Fix it?

    In some cases, you may need to reconfigure an active event and have to stop it to do so. Here’s a workaround that will allow you to minimize the effect end users will experience.

    1. Navigate to the Schedule page.
    2. Click the event you need to reconfigure and click the edit icon image2.png.
    3. Navigate to the Details tab.
    4. Click the Pause Event toggle image3.png to disable the event. image4.png 
    5. Click Save. Your encoder and all broadcasts will stop.
    6. Navigate back to the Schedule page.
    7. Click into the paused event > edit icon image2.png
    8. Configure the details to fix your event.
    9. Set the broadcast to start at least 5 minutes in the future and toggle Repeats off if it’s a recurring schedule.

    You may run into errors if you try to start the new broadcast less than 5 minutes after you’ve stopped the original broadcast.

    1. Click the Pause Event toggle to enable the event. image1.png  
    2. Click Save. Your event will restart automatically.
